OTC vs. Your Exchange Account
At some point, anyone holding a large token position has to decide how to trade in or out of it. The simplest option is often the most tempting: use your own exchange account, place a limit order, and forget about it. Eventually it fills at your price. But is that really the best way to move meaningful size in a token that may not be especially liquid?
Consider a token that trades $1MM of volume per day, and suppose you need to sell $1MM worth of it. Even with a limit order, your resting liquidity sits in plain view — and sophisticated players are very good at monetizing flow they can see. More often than not, that visible order gets picked off before it can work in your favor.
A better approach might be to spread the order across several venues, or to break it into smaller pieces worked over a period of time. Both tactics shrink your footprint and make your intentions harder to read.
Or perhaps liquidity isn't the problem — you simply worry that your own selling pressure will push the price down and erode your proceeds. This is precisely where OTC execution earns its place. A capable OTC desk maintains dedicated, high-performance connectivity to the major exchanges and can distribute a single order across time, venues, and trading pairs, working your position as gently as conditions allow and minimizing market impact along the way.
And if your assets are highly liquid, you might reasonably ask: why use OTC to trade something like BTC at all? Because a good desk does far more than find you a counterparty. OTC providers run smart order routing (SOR) — sometimes called best-execution algorithms — using that same high-performance connectivity and consolidated price feeds to send each slice of your order to whichever venue is showing the best available price at that moment.
The through-line is simple: the goal isn't just to get filled, it's to get filled well. Whether you're moving a thinly traded token or a blue-chip asset, the right execution partner can be the difference between the price you hoped for and the price you actually realize.
If you're weighing how best to execute a sizable position, that's exactly the kind of problem our desk is built to solve — we're always glad to talk through the options.
